Feeding and Nutrition for Tortoise Health

if you want a happy healthy tortoise you will need to provide not only a suitable environment for it to live in but also a varied diet. tortoises are herbivorous and require a mixed diet of vegetables, vegetation and fruits plus occasional supplements of minerals and vitamins.

Seven Factors that Affect a Tortoises Nutritional Needs

Species: each type of tortoise has its own nutritional needs depending
on where in the world it comes from. You need to be certain of where
your tortoise originates in order to provide the best diet.

Age: As with most growing animals the younger, still growing ones
require more nutrition but as it gets older it will require less.

Health: of your tortoise: the general health of your tortoise will
determine how much and what it eats.

Reproduction: the male requires a good diet in order to have sufficient
sperm count to breed and also desire to breed. the female will require
a good diet if she is going to lay eggs as she will need to ovulate as
well as produce strong calcium rich eggs.

Activity level: Again this can depend very much on the species of
tortoise you have. Some are naturally more active than others.

Stress: If you keep your tortoise in an inappropriate enclosure it will
become stressed and in turn its appetite will be reduced.

Food: By providing the correct type and variety of food your tortoise
needs you affect the nutritional value. Some foods that would be fine
for one species of tortoise may actually do harm to another. Therefore,
do your homework on the natural environment your tortoise comes
from. Even if your tortoise has been bred in captivity it is still
designed for a particular type of environment and you will have to
mimic this to ensure optimum health.

My family loves our tortoise. thank you for the tips in what to feed her. Our dad found her at his work site. He said there was a man that has about 20 of them but the tortoises escape and wonder into the street so my dad decided to bring the one that escaped that day so she wouldn't be harmed.
